Fever!

How did Sadie celebrate her 38th day of life? By getting an upper respiratory infection. And a fever. And topping off both with a trip to the ER. Not exactly what we'd call a celebration!

This little pumpkin caught the upper respiratory infection Colton and I had, - at first she just had congestion, a cough, and lots of sneezing, - we'd even taken her to the doctor to have her checked out, but she was fine. Then, last Tuesday evening she felt warm and I checked her temperature. Sadly, she had a fever and after talking to the on call nurse and the on call doctor they told us we needed to take her to Children's Hospital. :(

What a sad face. :(

So, off we went to the ER - after dropping Colton off at a friend's house to sleep. Sadie was fussy, but never inconsolable, so we weren't thinking she was too sick. But when a doctor tells you to get to the ER, well, we followed suit! It turns out when ANY baby under 3 months old comes to the hospital they HAVE to run a series of tests on them...including a spinal tap! OH MY GOODNESS! Our sweet 5 1/2 week old had a spinal tap.

Sweet sleeper

Our doctor was great (he was actually very comical) and did a terrific job of filling us in on the details and whys of all the tests. In addition to the spinal tap, she also had blood drawn, an IV put in, was catheterized, and had her nose suctioned out. She let us know throughout all of this that she was uncomfortable and quite unhappy - which of course we took as a good sign. What a trooper!

It was definitely hard to watch her go through all of the tests (lots of tears from mommy and baby), but we were thankful to be able to rule out any other causes (besides the respiratory and double ear infection) for the fever. They were checking for scary things like meningitis, hence the spinal tap.

All tuckered out

That was my first ER experience ever! I can't believe it was with our 5 week old. I'm sure we'll have more in our future (I figure raising kids will send us to the ER a few times). We are so very grateful our sweet girl is ok; it was not fun to see her so upset and in pain. She's had several doses of antibiotics to get rid of the ear infection. We had 3 follow up doctor's appointments last week to ensure she was getting better. We are happy to report we've got a sweet, healthy, able to breathe again baby girl in our arms.

Praise God she is doing better. So sorry you all had to go through all of that.
